How and what to measure

First off, you'll want to make sure you have a tape measure handy so you can take measurements to the nearest 1/16".  If you are unfamiliar with reading a tape measure, this youtube video provides a quick and easy tutorial.

If you'd rather watch a video showing how to measure for your custom microwave trim kit, you can watch one here.

1.  Microwave make and model

Fortunately measuring the microwave is not required (in most cases), but in order to ensure the trim kit fits your microwave properly, it's important to accurately record and share the model number.

First thing's first, check the front and back of the microwave for any identifying markings or labels. Sometimes, the make and model will be listed right there. If not, try opening the microwave door and looking inside. There may be a sticker or plate with the information you need. And if all else fails, try consulting the user manual or doing a quick Google search of the microwave's brand and any distinguishing features.

2.  Width of opening

The first measurement to gather is the width of the cut-out.  Stretch the tape from inside to inside and record the measurement to the nearest 1/16".

3.  Height of opening

The second measurement to gather is the height of the opening.  Stretch the tape from the bottom of the opening to the top of the opening and record the measurement to the nearest 1/16".

4.  Depth of opening

The third measurement you'll need to gather is the depth of the opening.  Extend the tape back into the opening so it touches the back cabinet wall.  Measure from there to the face of the cabinet and record the measurement to the nearest 1/16".

5.  Outside height of trim kit

By default, your custom trim kit will overlap the opening by 1" on the top and 1" on the bottom, but it can also be made to any specific height.  A specific height is desirable if you have adjacent drawers, openings, or countertops which you'd like to avoid interference with or possibly match for symmetry.  For example, in the photo below, the kit was made such that it aligns with the drawers to the left of the microwave.

6.  Outside width of kit

Similar to height, your custom kit will overlap the opening by 1" on the left and 1" on the right, but it can also be made to any specific width.  The specific width is desirable if you have adjacent drawers, walls, or openings which you'd like to match for symmetry or avoid running into.  For example, in the photo below the kit is made to match the width of the drawer below the microwave.

7.  Height of cabinet lip

The last thing you'll want to specify is whether your cabinet has a "lip" at the front edge.  Below are a couple of photos illustrating what a cabinet with a lip looks like and what a cabinet without a lip looks like.  By our estimate, 90% of cabinets we see do no have a lip.  If you do have a lip on you cabinet, it likely ranges in height from 1/16" to 3/4".
